Something that I come across a lot in my job, is skepticism or confusion about the hypnosis part of HypnoBirthing.
And yes, this is generally from partners, Dads-to-be in most cases.
The rest of this article is for them! I call it –
What the HECK is HypnoBirthing!!
So the mother of your unborn baby has told you she would like to practice HypnoBirthing for pregnancy and birth. You respond, “What the heck is that?”
I know, I know. The name is a little bizarre. And if you happen to be like most people, perhaps your only experience of hypnosis is seeing people on a stage seemingly embarrassing the shit out of themselves while the stage hypnotist has them perform a variety of unusual and strange activities.
But I have a secret for you…
Hypnosis for pregnancy and birth is INCREDIBLY different. In fact, it is actually really, really amazing. And I understand that you have questions. It’s only normal. My husband and I had lots of questions when we signed up for HypnoBirthing classes with our first pregnancy. Let’s tackle some of the most common ones.
What are you going to make us do?
Nothing weird… like quacking like a duck. I PROMISE!
My guess is that you are probably a pretty good person and you are probably wanting to be able to support your partner through this process the best you can. During the course, you are going to learn lots of easy-to-use techniques that help your partner to relax, breathe properly and reduce discomfort during labor.
You will learn how to become a pro at communicating with your chosen birth team—doctors, midwives, nurses, doulas, and so on. Not sure what the difference between all these birth specialist are??? I can help you figure that out too!
Your partner is going to need to focus 100% on having this baby, so that leaves you with the big responsibility of knowing what your birth preferences are, how to talk about them with your team, and how to evaluate any potential suggested changes in plan. Not sure what birth preferences are and how to compile them into an effective, collaborative document for your birth team? I got you covered.
More classes, Really?
Well… yes, I’m sorry!! I know many birthing locations offer childbirth classes, and if you have already attended those, I know the idea of going to another one with me can seem kind of crazy.
But trust me, my classes are independent childbirth classes and nothing like what the hospitals offer. What you’ll learn during our course will change this birth for the better. Hospital classes have their place for those that are interested in the medical side of birth, whereas HypnoBirthing is all about techniques to reduce stress and tension and therefore pain!
My classes do definitely focus on education. And I keep it basic and easy to understand. I decode medical jargon, which will leave you feeling more empowered and ready to take charge of your experience. Even though I was already a Registered Nurse with some Labor and Delivery experience when I took the course, HypnoBirthing allowed me to get out of my previously held view of birth which was from a very medicalized perspective and realize the all of the possibilities that birth could be. My entire outlook on birth changed for the better!
I’m not sure how I feel about hypnosis? Do I have to join in?
In the first class I’m going to address the common misconceptions about hypnosis and you’ll soon learn that it can be as simple as resting and focusing in a nice, relaxed state. We start with a light relaxation in the first session and continue to deeper states in later sessions.
Hypnosis is great for stress and for improving sleep. The feedback that I typically get from partners is that they find they become calmer at work, more relaxed at home, and sleep better! It’s also beneficial when you can get an understanding of the state your partner needs to be in during labor.
When you go through any of these hypnosis sessions with me, you are conscious, consenting, fully in-control, comfortably relaxed and aware of your surroundings and what it happening. You are not under my control and you will not do or say anything you wouldn't normally want to. If you have any questions about hypnosis, we can chat before the session starts.
Is this all just weird new-age stuff or is there science to it?
HypnoBirthing is based on neuroscience and the mind-body connection. The game changer for most partners seems to be the first session. I talk a lot about the body, the nervous system and how the uterus and hormones work in labor.
This isn’t new age or alternative, it’s really just going back to basics and understanding how the body works naturally.
The Big Question... The Money! What is this going to cost?!
Having a baby is a pretty expensive life event. It seems that there is just one purchase after another and you may also be thinking about your partner taking off time for maternity leave.
I understand this. I truly do. But something else that costs a lot is a really crappy birth experience.
In the United States, somewhere between 25-34% of mothers report their birthing experience was traumatic. Research has shown this can lead to postnatal depression and/or PTSD in both the birthing mother and their partner. You can just imagine how awful this could make those first few months, when it should be a special and exciting (albeit tiring) time. What if instead you and your partner went into your birthing experience feeling happy and empowered, ready to have a voice and make the decisions that are right for you and your family as well as confidence to change your plans if needed?
Think about any big event in your life. Maybe it’s a big and memorable birthday like your 21st. Or it could be your wedding. Or another that comes to mind. Think about the time, the energy and the money that went into planning that event. Days, weeks, or even months perhaps. And why did you do that? Because you knew you would remember that event forever.
This event, the birth of your baby, will also be something that will be remembered forever but in a much more primal way. And your partner will also remember this birth forever. She will remember how she felt, how she was supported, and what was said to her. Why not do all in your power to stack the odds in your favor for it to be a positive memory that you both will hold forever?
